Sound Blaster Talks To Epsilon eSports

Epsilon Smite team is over the moon, and rightly so. Newly crowned winners of the Smite World Champions 2016, they played a swift and impressive game, taking the title simply by blasting through the first three in the best-of-five set!

Congratulations on your enormous win; the Smite team was almost undefeated this Fall season. What’s your secret sauce?

Our secret sauce was how fast the team picked up the meta of the game and made it our own.  That way, no other team could counter us in that season. Therefore, we developed a style that was different from the rest in the League. This was done with lots of practice and formulating these strategies as a team in close communication.

With a game like SMITE, there’s loads of emphasis on teamwork, tactical movement etc. Share with us the secrets about having positive communication while in the tournament?

Positive communication is key. Hearing team members’ voices loud and clear helps to go through rough patches as you know you’re a strong core and you can overcome any objective. This is one of the main reasons we were able to recover from game 1 vs Cloud 9 at World Champs.

With the Sound BlasterX P5 In-ears, the different players in our team can always relay their positioning and actions clearly and concisely to keep the whole team updated about our in-game strategies.

You mentioned of the Sound BlasterX technologies driving your teams (BattleField 4 & Smite) to the win. Care to explain in detail?

SoundBlaster X P5 In-ears helped a lot to block the background sound at Worlds. The players on-stage were not separated by soundproof booths, and so this great noise-cancelling quality enabled us to focus solely on our goals. Clearly this had a very positive impact on us going on to lift the World Championship trophy!

BlasterX Performance

Sensitive FullSpectrum™ Audio Drivers

Sound is the ultimate weapon you need to have. Every detail matters in your gameplay – even it’s down to the subtlest of audio cues such as your enemies’ unseen footsteps, rustling foliage and more.

FullSpectrum drivers are defined by their ability to deliver sonic accuracy and clarity. At a minimum, only those capable of reproducing all sounds in the human hearing range (20Hz – 20 kHz) with clarity are utilized– so you won’t miss out on any audio cue.

This results in better positional audio, allowing you to experience greater awareness of potential dangers lurking in your vicinity. Thanks to the FullSpectrum Drivers, they feed you with audio cues that improve your overall awareness in-game.

*FullSpectrum Drivers are utilised across all BlasterX headsets.

Noise-cancelling Microphone

Noise-cancelling Microphone

If you’re in a team gameplay, you need to communicate effectively. An omni-directional microphone improves the quality of the communication among your team players. Set up your game for the maximum competitive advantage by keeping your team players together with the right audio commands – clear and accurate to win your battle!

Ported and Closed Headphone Design

Closed Port

The Sound BlasterX H7 and H5 headsets are built with this design language in mind: a ported and closed headphone design that isolates you from the outside world. Like your bass deep, tight and punchy? With strategically ports located within the headset, the driver is able to reproduce deeper bass from a smaller enclosure, like no other.

In other words, our headsets are capable of replicating the full gaming experience, from the low rumbling bass to gun explosions without compromising on the audio fidelity.

*The ported and closed headphone design is found exclusively in the Sound BlasterX H7 and H5 models.

BlasterX Durability

Steel Headband and Aluminum Architecture

We selected ultra-light materials yet they can withstand the tough requirements of a gaming world so you can game for hours. The lightweight steel headband is ready for anything.

Steel Headband & Aluminum Architecture

For a personality that’s built to last, the sturdy steel architecture of the headband lets you flex and twist any way you like without breaking. Aluminum alloy is also used on each side of the ear cups to improve the overall robustness and rigidity.

*The steel headband and aluminum architecture are found exclusively in the Sound BlasterX H7 & H5 models.

Braided Audio Cable

Braided Cables

As a finishing touch to any premium headset, the audio cables are wrapped in nylon braided sleeves to protect against potential cables snags, lesser tangling and resists cable abrasion over time.

*Braided audio cables are utilised across all BlasterX headsets.

BlasterX Design

Iterations of design for the best fit

BlasterX Design

We want to create a headset for the gamer who utilizes their tools for extended hours. Every detail of the design is carefully considered, to make the headset your preferred choice. The design philosophy prides on the ergonomics and overall comfort of the headset, so you can focus on your game in comfort – so good, you forget you’re wearing them.

Memory Foam Ear Pads

BlasterX Earcup Design

Different strokes for different folks. The ear pads are made from memory foam that contours to the shape of your head for better fit and better noise isolation over time.  They guarantee better seals for your ear as compared to traditional foam pads because they mold better to your head. Plus, the oval design sits atop the whole ear as compared to circular headphone design.

Protein leather, used in all our over-ear gaming headsets, has excellent elasticity to realize a level of comfort demanded by pro-gamers. It is also very durable that can withstand scratches and also require low maintenance.

Tilt Driver Implementation

Tilt Driver Design

These ergonomically designed headsets employ a tilt driver implementation that shapes the contours of your ears for a comfortable fit. Most importantly, there’s greater comfort, with more room for your ears.

*The tilt driver implementation can be found exclusively in the Sound BlasterX H7 and H5 models.

Matteo & “White99” – the Community Showcase #1

In Sound Blaster’s Community Showcase, we pay tribute to artistes’ passion and energy that shine through their works.

We had a chat with Matteo Schürmann, an emerging designer who has an eye for details that left us speechless with his “White99” case mod. Read on for more…

What got you started with PC modding?

I love PCs since I got my first one about 11 years ago. It’s always a great feeling to get new hardware, unbox it and put it into the system.

My first case mod was about 2 years ago when I bought a whole custom water cooling for my CPU. Well this wasn’t really a case mod, I only drilled some holes but it was something I never did before with my computer. A year later I wanted to change something and with the release of Nvidia’s new GPU lineup I got a new graphics card and integrated it into my loop. With the help of a friend I made a PSU cover and a reservoir holder and after a long day of work the inside of the case looked much better than before.

What was the motivation and inspiration for this project from?

I wanted to upgrade my system this year, the i5-2500k I had was great, but I needed more cores. About 6 months ago I got the attention of EK Water Blocks and they offered to support me. At first I wanted to do a black-yellow build using an MSI motherboard but I ended up buying one from ASUS. At this point in time I saw some great mods from Richard Keirsgieter who inspired me a lot.

Now I finished my first own project and there will be many more in the future.

Are there any specific details on the rig that you really want to point out?

This mod has many details I could point out. I already did a little tutorial about my light panels – the sLights – which you can find on my facebook page. But there’s one thing everyone can do very easily, modding the Soundblaster Z. I wanted to keep this card but the red cover just didn’t fit the rest of the build so I needed to change this.

Sound Blaster Z

I unscrewed the cover, pushed the little acrylic circle out and cleaned the cover with alcohol. After that I used primer and some white paint we still had at home. Now I only had to wait a few hours and assemble the card again.

The attention to detail for this mod is sublime; can you tell us your tricks to achieving those?

Thank you. Most important to me is that everything is well planned before I start working on it. A good example are the sLights I already mentioned. At first I measured the whole case and made some sketches. Next step was to create 3D models with a CAD program.

Sound Blaster Z mod

I know not many people are able to use them but even with good hand drawings and some help of other people you’ll get great results. The final step was to find someone with a CNC which isn’t really a problem, just look for a local firm or people who offer case modding, you find many of them on facebook.

Always have in mind what it should look like when it’s finished. Sometimes I disassemble the whole build just to take a detailed look at something. Take your time to make everything as perfect as possible.

FullSpectrum™ Audio Drivers – Insights

If you use headphones while gaming, your headphones take care of the audio portion of entertainment for an overall enjoyment.

You could be role playing as a First-Person Shooter (FPS) in a multi-player environment, or an infrastructure of a civilization. The last thing you want is to lose your sense of hearing to important cues in the game, such as low rumblings of a tank engine, and place yourself at a disadvantage!
FullSpectrum Audio Drivers

Sound Blaster gaming headsets employ FullSpectrum™ Audio drivers, a combination of technology coupled with quality audio drivers to deliver an assured, realistic experience – the way you are supposed to hear in the game and how the designers intended for it to sound.

Neodymium Audio Drivers

FullSpectrum™ headsets utilize Neodymium audio drivers are typically smaller and lighter than normal iron-ferrite drivers at the same flux density.

Therefore, the headset is light and this is very important for extended gaming sessions.  With the reduction in size, it expands the size of the acoustic chamber, thus better optimized. Also, they are generally more sensitive and powerful, which translates into loudness and lower distortion. For wireless gaming headsets such as the Sound Blaster EVO ZxR, they also translate into longer battery life.

Having quality components are just part of the whole package. The typical human hearing ranges from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. That means the headset should be able to reproduce the full range of sounds and audio cues as well. You wouldn’t use a headset that cannot replicate grenade explosions, would you?

Tactic Profile Control Panel
To achieve that, adequate audio tuning for such headsets is very important lest you want to have muddy bass or distorting highs without clarity. A general baseline is set to let users personalize the audio, via our TacticProfiles  that are already tuned specifically for different genres, or customize it via the Graphical Equalizer and SBX suite of effects processing. Now, you can create the sound you like to hear, with pristine audio clarity for an all-encompassing audio experience.

Creative Unveils Sound Blaster® X7 Limited Edition

SINGAPORE – 6 January 2015 – Creative Technology Ltd today unveiled a limited edition of its latest Sound Blaster® X7 at CES 2015. Recently named a double 2015 CES Innovations Awards Honoree in both the ‘Home Audio/Video Components and Accessories’ and ‘Computer Hardware and Components’ categories, the feature-packed Sound Blaster X7 which is an ultra high-resolution external USB DAC and powerful audio amplifier now comes in an exclusive pearl white color, includes a 144W power adapter that is capable of delivering up to 100W output to passive speakers, and has a very low headphone amplifier output impedance of 1 ohm to effortlessly drive even the more sensitive in-ear monitors (IEMs) on the market.

The Sound Blaster X7, showcasing at the 2015 International CES, is designed to connect with a range of gaming and entertainment systems as an ultra high-end external Sound Blaster audio solution with an impressive 24-bit/192kHz high-resolution 127dB digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a powerful 100W audio amplifier. It provides a superior, pure and lossless listening experience for games, music and movies – meeting the most discerning demands of audiophile listeners and enthusiast gamers alike.

Superior Ultra HD (High-Resolution) Listening Experience

The 144W (24V 6A) power adapter bundled with this limited edition Sound Blaster X7 is capable of harnessing the full potential of the built-in Texas Instruments TPA3116D2 Class-D amplifier inside to efficiently deliver up to 100W (2 x 50W RMS @ 4Ω) to passive bookshelf and tower speakers – giving users a more superior high-resolution audio listening experience. Coupled with Sound Blaster’s proprietary multi-core DSP, the SB-Axx1, and other high-end audiophile-grade components, such as the Burr-Brown PCM1794 127dB DAC, Nichicon “Fine Gold” capacitors, and the Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 headphone amplifier that can support up to 600Ω headphones, this Sound Blaster X7 will greatly enhance audio quality, delivering a powerful mind-blowing immersive gaming or movie audio experience as well as perfectly reproducing the full range of sounds from music recordings with high-fidelity and pristine detail.

Linear Frequency Response for Low-Impedance In-Ear Monitors (IEMs)

Using one of the lowest-rated impedance IEM in the market with the limited edition Sound Blaster X7 at 1 ohm headphone amplifier output impedance, the Shure SE846 IEM which has a rating of 9 ohms at 1 kHz is able to achieve one of the most linear frequency responses ever. With a small overall variance between +0.5 dB and -1.0 dB, the Sound Blaster X7 is able to reproduce audio almost faithfully. Compared to a typical headphone amplifier using the standard reference design of the Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 headphone amplifier chip at 10 ohms output impedance, one can see from the graph that the frequency response is non-linear with a significant variance between +2.25 dB and -3.8 dB. The frequency response fluctuation shows an increase in low frequencies and loss in mids at 5 kHz which results in coloration of sound when used with low-impedance IEMs like the Shure SE846.

“The Sound Blaster X7 is the most technologically advanced Sound Blaster we have ever created. We combined our decades of expertise in audio with the finest of the finest audiophile-grade components to deliver the most powerful high-resolution audio experience for games, music and movies. The original black edition of the Sound Blaster X7 comes with a headphone amplifier output impedance of 2.2 ohms which is good enough for most IEMs in the market. Now, our engineers have pushed the boundaries further by specially engineering the headphone amplifier circuit with an even lower output impedance of 1 ohm,” says Low Long Chye, General Manager of Sound Blaster. “The limited edition Sound Blaster X7 can accommodate both extreme ends of headphones in the market – from the most demanding high-impedance studio headphones to the most sensitive low-impedance in-ear monitors – with minimal distortion to audio content caused by variance in frequency response.”
